Community Service Graduation Requirements
One of the requirements for graduation is the completion of a community service project. There are two levels of involvement available for these community service projects. Those students who are working to meet requirements for the Florida Academic Scholars or Florida Medallion Scholars must document at least 100 hours or 75 hours of community service, respectively, in addition to fulfilling the three steps below. Please note, if students are enrolled in one of our magnet academies or are seeking a Cambridge AICE Diploma, please see the respective program links on our website for information on how to complete community service requirements for those programs. Students who are interested in meeting the 3 hour minimum community service requirements for standard high school graduation need only to follow the three steps below. Please note: Required community service form is available for download below.
STEP 1 – Project Proposal – Complete the Project Proposal form, have your parents review and sign the form and turn it into the teacher indicated below. This is to assure that your project is acceptable.
STEP 2 - Activity Log Form – Once the community service is finished, you must provide proof of service by having the person supervising your community service sign the Activity Log form. If the community service was done outside of school, a letter, written on the agency’s official letterhead, must be included with the Activity Log form.
STEP 3 – Essay – After completing your community service project, you must write a brief essay describing:
• The main activities of the project
• What you had to do to plan, start, and complete the project
• Any problems that occurred during the project and how they were handled.
• The impact you believe this project had on the community
• What you learned about yourself and the importance of giving something back to others as a consequence of your community service.
This essay must be stapled to the back of your Community Service packet; then turn in all documents to your Guidance Counselor.
HOW TO SELECT A MEANINGFUL COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT:
Think about the following questions before choosing a community service project:
- What need or problem that you are interested in working on exists in the community?
- What project can you develop to fulfill this community need or problem?
- Will your project provide an important service?
- Does the project match your interests, talents, and abilities?
- Are there any special qualifications you need to work on the project?
- Will you be able to spend the necessary time on the project?
- What planning is needed before beginning the project?
- Who needs to be contacted before the project begins?
The organizations and agencies listed below typically welcome volunteers. This list should help you develop ideas for your community service project. For a description of what types of services they need, you can call the volunteer desk at one of the following:
